For the FIOS anniversary event thing, does that mean that hank and john will be there or not? I am a little confused…

This is a good question, and we really want there to be ZERO confusion about this so please everybody read! The ONLY appearance John and Hank will be doing for the FAULT IN OUR STARS anniversary is the Evening of Awesome Carnegie Hall event in New York on January 15th, which we will be live streaming via YouTube (to watch, go to www.youtube.com/vlogbrothers at 7 PM EST on January 15th). There are also two rehearsals of the Evening of Awesome event happening on January 14th; these events are open to the public, and tickets are available here. 

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: John and Hank will NOT be present at ANY of the events listed here. These are authorless events; some will be showing the live stream event, some will be doing trivia, and some will be doing both. We’ve done our best to make it clear what kind of events the bookstores and libraries are doing, but if it’s unclear, please contact the store or library for more information.

To summarize: Physically, Hank and I will be at Carnegie Hall, which is located in New York City. VIRTUALLY, we will be in many places all around the world through the magic of livestreaming.

This is great. Thanks to everyone who organized the ki7a fundraiser and everyone who donated. To date the nerdfighter kiva group has loaned more than $1,700,000 to entrepreneurs in the developing world.

Yeah, so I learned about this on vacation. Many of the Barnes and Noble exclusive anniversary edition of TFiOS were misprinted and contain a portion of the Q&A in the middle of the book. (This Q&A should appear at the end of the book.) So what should you do? You should return the book to the store from which you bought it or else contact bn.com customer service and get yourself a correct edition, which has been printed and should be in stores very soon. 

I am really sorry about this. It was a mistake at the printer, and they are very sorry about it as well, but I want to be clear that no one at Penguin or B&N screwed up. These kind of things happen occasionally, but usually not on this large of a scale, and I know it’s a huge inconvenience. All the misprints should be off store shelves, and the fixed books will be available in the next couple days.

Language, Voice, and Holden Caulfield: The Catcher in the Rye Part 1

In which John Green examines JD Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye. John pulls out the old school literary criticism by examining the text itself rather than paying attention to the biographical or historical context of the novel (that’s for next week). Listen, words matter. The Catcher in the Rye has managed to endure without a movie adaptation because a lot of its quality arises from the book’s language. Find out how Holden’s voice, his language, and his narrative technique combine to make the novel work. Also, Thought Bubble gives us a quick rundown of the plot, in which Ikea Monkey may or may not appear.

Let us now begin to discuss J. D. Salinger’s great novel.
