World Book Night 2013

A special World Book Night edition of my first novel LOOKING FOR ALASKA is one of the 32 books being handed out for free today as part of World Book Night U.S.  Over half a million books will be given out in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Ireland today alone, so have a look at the WBN Facebook page and see if there are any events near you! Neil Gaiman will be at the Cambridge Public Library with Lisa Genova and Vanessa Diffenbaugh, Ann Patchett and James Patterson will be at Parnassus Books in Nashville and there’s loads more going on throughout the evening.

Over 25,000 volunteers are taking part in World Book Night U.S. in 6,200 towns and cities across the country, and while the event is intended to create more readers, it’s also an opportunity to share your favorite books with people you already know. If you pick up a free book today and you’re a keen reader, think about maybe passing it on to a light reader or a non-reader.

You can find out more about World Book Night U.S. on the official website and on their Facebook page.

When Things That Are Bad for You Are Good for the World

Legislation is currently making its way through the U.S. Congress that would require online retailers to charge sales tax on domestic sales.

People who do not live in the U.S. will find this idea very confusing, so let me briefly explain it: In most of the world, consumption is taxed at a standard national rate, and that tax is built into the price of something. So if you see a book price at 10 Euros, when you take the book up to the cashier and pay for it, you will learn that the book actually costs 10 Euros.

This is not the case in the United States, where consumption taxes (here known as sales taxes) are 1. not built in to the advertised price, and 2. are set and collected by individual states and sometimes even cities. So if you see a book priced at $10, in Chicago that book will actually cost $10.92, whereas if you buy exactly the same book in South Dakota, it will (probably) cost you $10.40, although some South Dakotan municipalities have higher sales tax.

It’s complicated, as you can see from this hilariously convoluted wikipedia article. Now of course what we should do is get rid of all these taxes and replace them with a single national consumption tax like every other country in the world, but we will never do this because states’ rights.

If online retailers have to charge sales tax on every item they sell in the U.S., it will create a massive headache: Software will need to be built that calculates sales tax based on the shipping address and then charges that sales tax and then remits it quarterly to the gazillion different municipalities that charge sales tax. This is not such a big problem for a huge company like Amazon, but it is a VERY BIG PROBLEM INDEED for a small company like DFTBA Records.

So this bill is bad news for me, and really for everyone who works for or often shops with DFTBA Records, because it will increase overhead and prices and decrease royalties.

But I think the bill is still good news for the world, because brick-and-mortar retailers, who really are important to a community’s success, are at a competitive disadvantage right now, because goods sold through the Internet are (on average) 5-10% cheaper due to being exempt from consumption taxes. That’s a huge competitive advantage for online retailers, and it also means they don’t contribute to the well-being of the communities where they do business: They don’t pay for the roads that their goods are shipped on, or the schools where their employees and customers are educated.

That’s not right. This bill will be a big blow to DFTBA Records and other independent online retailers, and some won’t be able to continue doing business. But most will (we’ll figure something out), and we can’t continue to exempt online sales from consumption tax in the U.S. We need a single national sales tax rate. But that ain’t gonna happen, and this is probably the best option remaining.

Sometimes bad news for you is good news for the social order. In those cases, it can be hard to be rational. (I know my first impulse in re. this bill was to be like, “WE MUST DEFEAT THIS THING THAT WILL HARM MY COMPANY.”) But ultimately I don’t think that kind of selfishness makes for better governance.

This bill is bad for me. And I’m in favor of it.

oh p.s. Shop at DFTBA quickly, while it’s still deliciously free of sales tax.

#10 Swindon Town - Hartlepool United (League one)

Sitting top of the league the boys host Hartlepool and look to keep up the good start to the season. Manager John Green talks about homophobia in sports as well as the fictional world of the swoodilypoopers.

In which I discuss the rampant homophobia in professional football fan culture while showing Hartlepool a thing or two about greatness.

I find it hard to picture the geologic event that made this happen. Central Africa.

When you follow a lot of contemporary art blogs and also astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield, sometimes you’re like, “Wait, is that an abstract painting or is that THE PLANET EARTH?”

Q:You didn't really respond to a lot of the concerns brought up in the yourfaveisproblematic post. Why won't you apologize for the "nerd women" comment or the racist (Hanko de Mayo, Islam related) stuff mentioned on there? I agree that mistakes are fine, but you as an influential person should try harder to publicly address mistakes when you make them. And if you don't think these things are problematic, you should learn more about racism, sexism (and other things) and examine your own privilege.

Anonymous

I did respond to a lot of the concerns. I didn’t respond to all of them because I didn’t want to appear overly defensive, but okay:

1. I am sorry for the jokes I made in that video where I said nerd women were an underutilized romantic resource. I thought it would be clear from the purple prose that I was kidding in the video, but I also said a bunch of other stupid things in it, and I would not say them now, and if I owned the video (which I don’t) I would take it down. I regret it, and I’m sorry.

2. I have addressed the H*** d* M*** issue endlessly and never to anyone’s satisfaction. We’ve stopped using the term, even though many in the Mexican American nerdfighter community have asked asked us to keep using it.

3. Most of my college career was devoted to studying Islamic thought and practice. I created an introduction to early Islamic history and theology that thousands of Muslims around the world have recommended. I have reviewed and sang the praises of hundreds of good books written by Muslims and/or about the Islamic world. I have read the Quran and collections of hadiths. To my knowledge, no one has ever accused me of being Islamophobic. If they have, I don’t know why.

3a. As for the word kafir, you cannot attribute something a character in my novels says to me. Hassan and Colin have a very specific relationship with the word kafir that does not make sense out of context.

4. I talk about my privilege as a cisgendered white guy living in the US a lot, and I try my best to be conscious of that privilege.

5. In addition to never having sexually assaulted a fan, I have never (at least that I can recall) “stroked” a fan. (I don’t really know what stroking is in this context?) I don’t really touch strangers, to be honest, because of my anxiety disorder.

6. Every single time I have ever told the story of the horrid way I first asked Sarah out, I have added that it was horrid. That’s the whole point of the story.

7. This can go on and on and on and on and on and on, so I’ll stop now. Also, please don’t send mean or threatening messages or whatever to the person who runs that tumblr. That’s not nice. kthxbai.
