Mitt Romney isn’t the only rich person who is out of touch with the reality of middle class experience. (I would argue that Obama—who is also plenty rich—is out of touch, too.) But it is truly, truly astonishing that Romney referred to “the waiters and waitresses THAT come in,” because of course you do not say THAT when you are referring to people. (You say who.) You say THAT when you are referring to objects. I realize this is a common grammatical mistake, but the fact is, Romney has great grammar. He says who all the time when referring to people. But when referring to service workers, he said that. I hope he apologizes.  EDIT: Upon reflection, I was wrong. For one thing, Romney frequently says “People that.” This is a grammatical mistake, but it’s not a dehumanizing one unless and until the correct grammar is recognized and internalized. Also, I entered into a proscriptive/descriptive debate in a way I’m really not qualified to do. I just personally dislike that particular mistake.
