fuckyeahtattoos:

“Grateful to be a little boat, full of water, still floating.” -John Green.
I got this tattoo on the 17th of Dec 2012 for so many reasons. It doesn’t really matter what happened, but I’ve had a tough couple of years and an even worse few months. I’ve wanted a John Green related tattoo for years, he’s my absolute favourite author. But just at the right time, I remembered the Thoughts From Places youtube video that John made in Amsterdam that ended with this quote, and it summed everything about me up in the precise way that only John Green can. I was also much more comfortable with the fact that it could be turned into a visual tattoo instead of just words on my skin. But to me it means,
To never let myself be totally consumed by things or people. In other words, you can let the water in but don’t stop being a boat.
Be grateful for surviving.
Float on.
And as my tattooist pointed out, there will always be things you have to carry with you, but you can’t let them sink you.
And finally, it’s a homage to my third best friend, an author who doesn’t even know I exist.
It was done by Dane at Mad Villain Tattoo in Moorabin, Melbourne, Australia. He’s an incredible artist and is insanely dedicated to his art. He builds his own tattoo guns from scratch and mixes his own ink, and is generally an awesome dude.

That is lovely. But it better be (at least) your second tattoo!

I took the train yesterday and some girl to my right read a newspaper. I looked over to her and thought something like “wow that politician looks a lot like John Green”. Then I looked again and it actually was a huge picture of John Green above an ad for the german version of The Fault In Our Stars. This totally made my day.

Das Schicksal Ist Ein Mieser Verrater is an astonishing success in Germany (it has made the Spiegel bestseller list three times, even though that list includes all hardcover books, including books for adults). Also, German critics have been obscenely generous to the book, comparing me to Jonathan Franzen and Philip Roth. (Really.)
There is only one possible explanation for all this: My translator, Sophie Zeitz, is a much better writer than I am. So thank you, Sophie!

Yeah, this basically sums up my unpopular preference for Fahrenheit as a measurement of temperature.
I want a number (usually positive) that will describe my personal experience of the weather. That is all I want a temperature scale to do: I want it to give me a large number when it is hot and a very small number, or even a negative one, when it is cold.
I realize there are culinary/scientific/medical reasons to cite temperatures as well, but what I MOST need temperature to do is express the relationship between the air and my skin.

83% of American households have combined incomes under $100,000.
(But this points to something much more interesting, which is that almost all of us feel like we are middle class. Do you think that you’re middle class? I certainly do. I remember in high school, my European History teacher asked us to raise our hands if we considered ourselves middle class, and every single person in class raised his or her hand except for this one guy, who was the heir to a department store fortune. I laughed at the time, but in retrospect he was one of very few people who answered honestly. If you’re in that top 25%, meaning that you have two parents who work and who both earn more than $50,000 a year, you are much wealthier than most American families. Like, this guy comes off as a total brat, but most people in his position probably have the exact same experience.)

I like this because it is very simple and very conceptual. I proposed something similar (only with a broken circle instead of a broken line).

Today (and I have only signed about 1,000 today) I have been unusually concerned with the whatitywhat in particular—i.e., the volume of the J in the J scribble. The volume of the enclosed space in the J is wildly inconsistent.
These are the things that worry me.

Last Words of Notable People - even cheaper- a note from the author

tinychickendisease:

(The supposed author of Last Words of Notable People submitted this to me.)

Hi, saw your post about Last Words of Notable People being available on Amazon now for only  $66.50. Actually it is only $39.95 — here is a trick for nerdfighters. Click on “used and new from $39.95” (on the right side of the Amazon page for the listing). The new copies at 39.95 — the seller is “Reference Desk Press.” I am the compiler and I put them up on Amazon at a low price because of the response to John’s video — many people thought the price was too high—it was originally meant only as a low pubblishing run library reference book so that is why it was priced high — just to cover costs. I appreciate you letting people know about the book and I appreciate you passing this along if possible. If anyone buys one from Reference Desk Press via Amazon and wants it signed — just shot me an e-mail when you order.  Thanks again. - William B. Brahms, fan of John and Hank and Last Words of course!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0976532522/sr=/qid=/ref=olp_pg_new?ie=UTF8&coliid=&startIndex=0&me=&qid=&sr=&seller=&colid=&condition=new

This is pretty cool. The author of (by far) the best-ever books about last words has made it (much) less expensive for nerdfighters. Awesome.

I just moved to Michigan for graduate school and decided to splurge on a specialized license plate.  It got here today and I had to upload a picture to effyeahnerdfighters immediately—can you tell that I’m a bit excited?  It is definitely worth every penny!

When we moved to Indiana, I tried to get a DFTBA license plate, but it was already taken.

I liked the idea of “Hectic Glow,” and the imagery that came with it.  I tried to incorporate this in my design.  I plan to embellish this by using actual people with some sort of light to create this effect rather than a brush with a glow effect.
